From Boardroom to Baby: Naming Tips from an Expert
Let’s be honest, as a professional brand namer, I get asked for baby-naming advice a lot. And while my days are spent crafting the perfect monikers for companies and products, the parallels to naming a tiny human are surprisingly strong.
So, you might be wondering, does a brand namer have any business giving baby-naming advice? And should he even be providing actual baby name ideas? Here’s the thing: choosing a baby name is deeply personal. It’s a decision imbued with emotion, family history, and hopes for the future. Suggesting specific names feels, well, a little intrusive.
However, I can offer a framework—a process honed over years in the branding trenches—that can help you navigate this exciting (and sometimes daunting) journey. And since we just passed peak baby conception season, I have a hunch quite a few of you might be thinking about this very topic!
Tip #1: Brainstorm Big (Really Big!)
First things first: do you want a classic, popular name or something unique that will make your little one stand out? Both are great choices—just be intentional about it. My own name was the #1 boy’s name the year I was born, and while I share it with many others, it hasn’t held me back!
Once you’ve decided on your general direction, it’s time to unleash the floodgates! Gather inspiration from everywhere:
• Family Files: Dig into your family tree. First names, middle names, maiden names—they’re all fair game and can be meaningful tributes.
• Baby Name Bonanza: Those baby name books and websites? Use them!
• Magazine Maven: Looking for truly unique inspiration? Grab some magazines outside your usual reading—think Travel + Leisure, Vogue, or Outdoor Life. Scan for interesting names and evocative words that spark your imagination.
• Popularity Poll: Check out the Social Security Administration’s list of popular baby names. Decide if you want to lean into the trends or forge your own path.
Compile a list of dozens, even hundreds, of names. The more, the merrier!
Tip #2: Whittle Down to Your Winners
Now that you’re armed with a massive list, it’s time to start refining. Say the names out loud. How do they feel on your tongue? Which ones stick in your mind when you wake up in the morning?
If you have a partner, involve them in the conversation, but keep an open mind. Imagine your child introducing themselves at school or in a job interview. How do you want people to react to their name?
Gradually narrow your list down to a handful of favorites—three to five is a good target.
Tip #3: Mum’s the Word (Seriously!)
This is crucial, whether you’re naming a baby or a billion-dollar brand. Resist the urge to solicit opinions from everyone you know. People are naturally critical of new names, and you’ll likely encounter unhelpful comments like, “That reminds me of my grumpy old neighbor!” or “That doesn’t sound like a real name!”
Trust your gut, protect your favorites, and keep your shortlist under wraps.
Tip #4: Meet Your Muse
Here’s my favorite piece of advice for expecting parents: if you’re torn between a couple of names, don’t feel pressured to decide before the baby arrives.
When you finally hold that precious little bundle in your arms, look into their eyes, and marvel at their tiny features, the right name might just reveal itself. Many parents have told me this approach worked wonders for them. You may already have a final name before your baby is born. But if not, there’s magic in waiting to meet them before making the final call.
